THE POOR ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU: THE STORY OF FANTINE

The third chapter in our book focuses on the plight of the impoverished. Many of us have learned that Christianity should lead us to have concern for the poor. But knowing how to be in ministry with the poor with grace can be challenging. We want to meet the real, material needs of people and ask the difficult questions addressing the causes that lead to poverty in the first place.

We will continue our study with a video featuring Matt Rawle. Matt will talk about the primary themes of our session today: the poor and faithful Christian witness. Notice how he explains these themes using examples from Les Misérables. Make connections to what we have read together in his book. Then, we will discuss both the video and our book together.

As you consider the subject of poverty, what stories come to mind that illustrates the calling Christians have to care for those who are in need? You might think of a Bible story or a verse, but you might also recall a person who helped the poor or a member of your church who has demonstrated a faithful response. Share your example.

What feelings do you have toward poverty and toward the poor? Be honest. Are you compassionate or cold? Are you concerned or indifferent? Are you afraid or driven to help? Why?
